SELF PORTRAITS OF A PREVIOUS IMAGE

Each painting is an experience in the moment.  If I were painting a rose, would the rose be from the past or the present?  These paintings are pictorial memoirs of characters that I portrayed in films from the 1960s that are now cult classics .  The experience of painting these pictures was a three-way dialogue between the actress, the character, and my vision as the painter, using myself as an archetype from a previous image.  I entered into an altered state to capture the essence of the women I played.  This mysterious experience of recapturing the characters in my films may hint at the torment and longing that I personally faced in those times, and perhaps bring into remembrance for the observer of these images the innocence, the anguish, and the complexity present in the consciousness of that era.
